Meet Melissa Page, Registered Clinical Counsellor

Melissa's journey into counselling is a natural extension of her longstanding commitment to caring for others.

Before becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Melissa spent more than two decades working in healthcare, including a career as a dental hygienist. Her professional experiences, combined with the challenges and transitions she has navigated in her own life, have shaped her understanding of the connection between physical health, emotional well-being, and human relationships.

As a wife and mother of three teenagers, Melissa appreciates the sometimes complicated realities of balancing family, relationships, personal identity, and the demands of everyday life.

She recognizes that people rarely arrive at counselling with just one isolated concern. Our emotions, relationships, past experiences, and current circumstances are often interconnected, and understanding those connections can be an important part of personal growth.

A Compassionate, Individualized Approach to Counselling

At the heart of Melissa's counselling philosophy is a simple belief: healing happens through connection.

That connection might involve developing a stronger understanding of ourselves, exploring our relationships with others, or experiencing the safety and acceptance of a supportive therapeutic relationship.

Melissa takes a person-centred, trauma-informed approach to counselling, recognizing that every individual has a unique history, perspective, and set of needs.

Rather than assuming there is one solution that works for everyone, she works collaboratively with clients to explore their experiences, identify meaningful goals, and develop greater emotional awareness.

An important part of Melissa's approach is recognizing that our emotional experiences are not limited to our thoughts. Stress, grief, anxiety, and difficult life experiences can also influence how we feel physically and respond to the world around us.

By incorporating awareness of both the mind and body, she helps clients explore their experiences in a way that respects their individual comfort, readiness, and pace.

Areas Melissa Can Help With

People seek counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there's a specific event or challenge that brings someone to therapy. Other times, it's a gradual feeling that something isn't quite right.

Melissa has particular interests in supporting individuals experiencing:

  • Anxiety and depression: Exploring worry, persistent stress, low mood, emotional overwhelm, and patterns that may be affecting daily life.

  • Grief and loss: Navigating the emotions associated with losing a loved one, changes in relationships, or other meaningful losses and transitions.

  • Stress, fatigue, and burnout: Understanding the effects of ongoing demands, setting boundaries, and developing healthier ways to respond to stress.

  • Self-esteem and self-worth: Exploring self-criticism, identity, confidence, and the ways we relate to ourselves.

  • Parenting and family dynamics: Supporting individuals as they navigate parenting challenges, changing family roles, and complicated relationship patterns.

  • Purity culture and religious trauma: Providing a respectful space to explore the emotional and relational impacts of difficult religious experiences.

  • Life transitions and personal growth: Working through uncertainty, changing priorities, relationship challenges, and questions about identity or direction.

You don't need a formal mental health diagnosis or a major life crisis to benefit from counselling. Sometimes having a dedicated space to reflect, process emotions, and gain perspective can be valuable on its own.

What to Expect When Working With Melissa

Beginning counselling can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you've never attended therapy before.

Melissa understands the importance of creating an environment where clients feel comfortable being themselves, asking questions, and sharing their experiences without fear of judgment.

Her approach emphasizes collaboration, curiosity, compassion, and respect for each person's individual story.

Depending on your needs and goals, Melissa may incorporate several therapeutic approaches into your sessions, including:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Helping individuals develop greater psychological flexibility, explore personal values, and respond to difficult thoughts and emotions in meaningful ways.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Incorporating practical strategies for emotional regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Person-Centred and Emotion-Focused Approaches: Creating space to explore emotions, develop self-understanding, and better recognize emotional needs and patterns.

Trauma-Informed and Somatic Approaches: Recognizing the relationship between emotional experiences and physical sensations while emphasizing safety, choice, and individual pacing.

Counselling is not about being told what to think or how to live. It's an opportunity to work alongside a supportive professional who can help you explore your experiences and develop approaches that feel meaningful to you.

Getting to Know Melissa Beyond the Counselling Room

Outside of her professional life, Melissa enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, travelling, discovering new coffee shops, and reading everything from mystery novels to neuroscience.

She's also an enthusiastic dog owner, although her Mexican rescue dog is apparently much better suited to long walks than her English bulldog!

Melissa values authenticity, curiosity, and humour, recognizing that life can be complicated, unpredictable, and occasionally a little absurd.

These qualities are also reflected in her approach to counselling. She believes that genuine connection, compassion, and the ability to approach our experiences with openness can be important parts of the therapeutic process.
